Vermin shut Warwickshire recycling centre

A rat and mouse infestation cause by fly-tippers at a Warwickshire recycling centre has led the local council to close the facility.
Stratford District Council has announced that they are to remove the facility on Wood Street in Southam as of Monday, 9 January. A council representative said they had been making constant attempts to clear the site of unrecyclable rubbish that had been dumped there, but that it had started to cause too great a threat to human health for it to be maintained.
Ollie Schofield, the authority's street scene manager, said an inconsiderate minority of people had been responsible for drawing the rats and mice to the centre, but that they had spoiled it for the majority.
"It wasn't a decision we took lightly," Mr Schofield said, highlighting that most of the local residents were entirely blameless.
Local resident, Liz Taylor, has said she understands why the council is taking such action but is still hoping to persuade them to keep the centre open if a new solution can be established.
"Asking people to come forward in confidence in the knowledge they have done their bit to keep the recycling centre open will give the council a chance to address the problem," she said.
