Rats running wild in Cumbria

06/09/2010

An infestation of rats in Allerdale, Cumbria, has become so bad that the local council has been forced to launch an investigation into the matter.

Dozens of rats have been seen in the hedges and on the pavements beside Solway Road, opposite the town’s railway station.

One resident said, “There were so many of them I couldn’t count them. I have never seen anything like it. I turned round and went back the way I had come as they were that bad.”

Allerdale Council is now inspecting the area to try to isolate the problem. However, Ernie Davidson, the authority’s environmental services manager, said rat poison could not be placed in public places for safety concerns.

Another local resident, Sarah McAllister, who often uses the train station said, “When I pass the hedges on Solway Road, I can hear a rustling noise. I saw about 10 rats running near the station a couple of days ago. When I got closer to them they ran into the bush, but I could hear them as I walked past, it was horrible.

“I think something really needs to be done about it, I don’t like walking past the hedges anymore,” she added.
