Rats 'create health concerns for young mother'

27/11/2009

A young mother in Derry has expressed concern about the presence of a rat in her attic.

After hearing noises in her home, she called on the council to take pest control measures. A trap set up in the house eventually caught a large rat, which left Orla Kelly in fear that there could be more of the creatures in her home, reports the Derry Journal.

She lives in Housing Executive accommodation and her local Sinn Fein councillor Kevin Campbell revealed that the mother-of-two has complained she cannot sleep because she is so worried about the rodents.

"Rats can spread disease through their urine and that could create health concerns for this woman's children, the youngest of whom suffers from bronchitis," he said.

The Housing Executive stated that Ms Kelly had been offered alternative places to stay, but that the resident had turned them down because they were outside of her local area.

This comes after Jed Lessard of Ohio Valley Pest Control warned that rats are more likely to be found in homes in the colder months of the year because they look for warm places to live, the Marietta Times reported.
