Fly-tippers 'could attract vermin'
11/02/2010
Pest control could become a problem in Leyland after it was revealed that fly-tippers are putting their rubbish at a recycling centre rather than in appropriate bins.
Rats and mice may be attracted to the piles of waste, which could harm the environment, the Lancashire Evening Post reported.
Dubbed the "lazy fly-tippers", those guilty of leaving their garbage at the recycling centre have previously dumped items including electrical appliances and clothes in the Tesco car park.
Councillors have now decided to take action and will issue £2,500 fines for anyone caught illegally dumping rubbish.
"Not only can it attract vermin, it is not good for the environment and diverts council resources away from delivering front-line services," councillor Peter Mullineaux explained.
People could be put off from recycling by the build-up of waste in the area, he added.
The government advises anyone witnessing fly tipping not to touch the waste or disturb the site and to report it to the local authority.
