Council 'has taken action on rats in shopping precinct'

19/08/2009

A local authority has insisted that pest repellent has been used to get rid of rats from a shopping precinct in Hampshire.

Fareham Borough Council has recently been criticised for failing to address an ongoing rodent problem in West Street in Portchester.

However, Councillor Roger Price has revealed that measures to get rid of the rats have been undertaken by Fareham Borough Council's environmental health department.

However, he said that if the rodents are occupying land that is not owned by the authority, it is within its rights to make a charge.

"Rats are such a menace to health," he told the Portsmouth News.

"They should deal with them first and then sort out who's going to pay for it later."

Councillor Price added that if anyone sees rats on the street again, they should get in touch with environmental health services.

Local businesses could also benefit from considering options such as electromagnetic pest repellent, a means of getting rid of rats that negates the need for rat poison.
